Altamira’s Industrial and Port Project, was born in a National Program specialized in development of industrial ports, with the main objective from our Federal Government to decentralize industrial growth from the big cities in the Country, towards new strategic development cores, as well as satisfying the demand for additional windows towards international commerce to the central and northern states in Mexico.
In 1993, a change in Mexican regulations made way for the creation of the innovative legal figure, the Integrated Port Administrations (APIs), mercantile societies operated with government capital, but with absolute administrative and financial autonomy.
On June 29th, 1994, the Secretary of Communications and Transportations (SCT) awarded the Administración Portuaria Integral de Altamira, S.A. de C.V. (API Altamira) the right to use and take advantage of the public domain land, located inside the Port Facilities in Altamira, Tamaulipas; document that was issued in the Official Diary of the Federation on the 22nd of September in the same year. It was modified later on the 27th of May, 1996, with the delimitation of the specified port premises; in addition to this, on February 23rd 1999, 2,135.6 hectares were added to the industrial development area for its commercialization; 38.5 ha were added later and 660.6 ha were acquired by FONDEPORT, summing up a total 2,834.7 hectares for our industrial development zone.
API Altamira, since the very first beginning of its operations and based on its Master Development Program, focused all its efforts on improving the port’s operational behavior and satisfy as much as possible the market’s and users’ demands; afterwards to facilitate and promote private investment in port and industrial facilities, activity that nowadays has become a predominant factor in the zone’s rapid growth.
